Why Penn-Sylvan is a Top Sawmill in PA

At their core, sawmills in Pennsylvania are relatively simplistic in that they procure, cut, dry, and sell harvested timber from regional forests and abroad. However, certain capacity limitations, kiln sizes, the number of facilities, and access to premium standing timber draw the line between small-time sawmills and the true top sawmills in PA. Penn-Sylvan has decades of experience and multiple sawmill locations to meet the tremendous demand for kiln-dried hardwoods while practicing sustainable harvesting and protecting the forests we rely on. Multiple Pennsylvania Sawmill Facilities

Due to considerable national and global demand for kiln-dried hardwoods, Penn-Sylvan quickly expanded and grew to include several sawmills in Pennsylvania. Positioned near the heart of the Allegheny National Forest, Penn-Sylvan maintains several separate sawmill facilities that produce enormous quantities of veneer logs and kiln-dried lumber.

  • Spartywood Facility: Penn-Sylvan’s Spartywood facility is among the largest sawmills in PA and sits on 130 acres with four separate sawmills, three grading stations, and nine different kilns. With over 400,000 board feet of dry kiln capacity, this location serves as the log yard to load containers destined for overseas locations.
  • Brush Run Facility: Serving as the main log yard for Penn-Sylvan, the Brush Run location offers premier veneer and #1 quality sawlogs for global distribution. This location maintains a high-volume automatic resaw and two additional ripping saw mills for cutting pallet boards. Nearly 400,000 board feet of lumber are run each month at this sawmill location.
  • Riceville Corporate HQ: The Riceville Kilns and Corporate Headquarters for Penn-Sylvan are contained on another expansive hundred acres with multiple kilns and grading stations to help receive lumber from other contracted sawmills. This facility helps produce Penn-Sylvan’s world-renowned 21 millimeter production, which is exported to over 20 countries. This facility further expands the capacity of Penn-Sylvan and comprises the largest grouping of Pennsylvania sawmills supporting international trade of hardwoods.

Sawmills in PA with High-Capacity Throughput

Few sawmills in PA, let alone the United States, can match the amount of board feet throughput that Penn-Sylvan can produce in a given month. This tremendous production capacity allows Penn-Sylvan to support overseas demand for high-quality hardwoods alongside domestic production goals for veneer logs and pallet boards. Penn-Sylvan proudly manufactures and kiln dries over 12 million board feet of hardwood lumber annually, with a wide variety of variable thicknesses, species, and heat-treated industrial grade lumber. This level of throughput would not be possible with decades of experience and multiple generations of family tradition guiding the services from sourcing hardwood standing timber to sustainable practices and efficient processing methods.

Success at Penn-Sylvan is not just measured by its impressive board feet production and high-quality hardwoods but also by its unwavering commitment to sustainable forestry, timber harvesting, and sawmill practices.
